Next to a living room, decorating a dining room is one of my favorite things! There's so much opportunity to make it beautiful, from furniture, to lighting... the options are endless. I kept mine a simple farmhouse style, with lots of re-purposed furniture.
The centerpiece of any dining room is of course the table and chairs. I love a big, chunky distressed farmhouse table. I never worry about fork marks, or stains... it just adds to the character!
I found this beauty on Craigslist:
When I brough the table home, it was an off yellow and pretty dirty. I chalk painted and glazed...
I also rescued this bench... it was black, so I painted it a pale grey and glazed...
No table is complete without a beautiful centerpiece. I love to change mine out with the seasons, so one of my favorite tricks is to find a vase that you love, and switch out the greenery in it. I found this eucalyptus at Trader Joe's and just let it dry over a few days.
I found this hutch on Craigslist as well, and added the same white chalk paint to it. It sits above an old wine rack we have had for years. Eventually I'd like to get a big wood hutch, but I like this for now.
I love to display white pottery, I just think it looks so fresh and clean.
The clock stopped working, so I just took of the hands... I still think it looks cute!
I love a three tiered stand... another way to decorate with the seasons. I put some dried hydrangea in mine and added a ceramic bird for spring.
Another one of my Craigslist finds is this amazing buffet. It was a terrible yellow color and just so dirty when we brought it home for $30.
Out came the chalk paint and glaze once again! The mirror above the buffet used to belong to my grandmother. It's really quite heavy, and it was gold. It sat in our basement for years, and I finally decided to bring it upstairs and find a spot for it. It has amazing detail, and with some white paint, I think it looks wonderful!
Here's a little peek into the kitchen...
Don't be afraid of white in a dining room.... I bought these Parsons Chairs and they were more of a muddy oatmeal color, so I bought the white slipcovers at IKEA, and they are really bright and so easy to wash!
